In plain words
Naturally. Each one must try to recognise for oneself the secret and the consciousness of one's own life. Forgetting our true nature and following our reflection, we journey through Ajñāna into still deeper darkness. First of all you must become your own guru. You must follow the world as a reflection in the form of practice. That is why: Nature is a preacher. Life is a teacher, they said. Only when we recognise this truth shall we reach the goal at the right time, with our life on the proper path. Every person must set out to develop and kindle their own divinity. We may take refuge in a few books only, learn them by heart with great effort and pass at the top level. We should not think that our studies are complete by that alone. Learning that comes from acquaintance with books and from learning by heart cannot be learning. That is why we — Nature is a preacher. In what way is Nature a preacher? With patience, with Satya, without complaint, with an unselfish spirit, it bears and endures everything for us, and keeps showing the world its peaceful nature, its natural form and its truthful spirit. Suppose there is a tree. This tree bears with the sun and the rain and endures them. Even if someone hurts it or harms it, it endures it. When the very people who harmed it seek its shelter and long for its shade, it gives them coolness. It does not hate them. It does not pay them back. Out of its patience it gives them sweet fruit. Man must first recognise the natural peaceful nature of this tree, and through it recognise some of its qualities himself. Now look at the birds. These birds play their games all the time in Ānanda and delight. They do not earn and hoard wealth of any kind for some life that is to come someday. The birds too recognise the truth that life is fleeting. So they enjoy each moment's life and each moment's hunger at that moment only, and never brood over what will become of them later. They do not scramble at all with "Oh, how are my children to prosper?" for a bank balance or some other kind of progress, or to build houses and mansions and support them. They rely on their own self-confidence. A small example. A small bird alights on a tender branch. But the moment it sits, the branch sways. The bird has no fear at all that the branch has swayed. The reason.
