In plain words
It brings despair. In the same way, when we come into touch with such sayings in the Veda and the Upaniṣad as Vedo svarūpo'ham, Ahaṃ brahmāsmi, Tat tvam asi, Prajñānam brahma and Ayam ātmā brahma, they bring us spirit and encouragement of many kinds. In the same way, when we are in touch with vices and with evil talk, they bring us discouragement and despair. It is the same with words: when someone says, "Chī! You wicked fellow!", a kind of anger starts up in us. When someone says, "Hey, you mad fool!", even more anger rises in us. This is the śakti-vṛtti of a word. Words alone stir up agitation or delight in us. In the same way with our eyes: when we see something bad, or when we see our enemies, a kind of agitation wells up in us. When we see dear friends, or our mother and father, joy grows in us. The cause of this joy and of this agitation is our sight itself.
So whatever comes to us in these five senses has come about only through the mind. Sound, touch, form, taste, smell and the rest have all arisen in the mind itself. Our past, our future and our present too have sprung from the mind itself. Childhood, youth, old age and adolescence, every one of them was born in this mind itself. In short, the mind alone is the support of the whole world. The mind alone is the root. Without the mind there is no man at all. Without man there is no world at all. So this whole world is built by this mind. The mind is forever dancing on these objects. The mind is forever dancing on these things. The mind is forever dancing on the objects of the senses. That is why things that are near seem to us far away, and things that are far away seem near. What is the reason? Because the mind dances wildly on these things, things that were near drift far away. Things that are far come near. So the mind alone is the root cause of our partings and our meetings. The mind alone is the root cause of our pleasure and our pain. The mind alone is the cause of our bondage and of our Mokṣa as well. Hence, mano mūlam idaṃ jagat. The whole world has the mind as its root. We fancy that each thought gives us some joy. But the delusion we fall into keeps sinking deeper into delusion. If we want to get some thing, then until we get it we have to go through many sorrows, hardships and losses.
