Passage 9

In plain words

They look on rāga and tāla alone as what matters, but they pay no heed at all to bhāva and rāga. We try for a rāga that pleases the people around us, but we have not set ourselves to offer a feeling that pleases. The feelings in this bhajan must move the heart and melt it. This Bhakti came into being within a bhajan of that kind.

Embodiments of Prema! Bhakti, Bhakti: it does not mean merely some kind of worship of God. What is chief is Prema. This Prema is the very Prema that is in everyone. We must regard the path that makes this Prema one as true Bhakti. To worship God and torment living beings can never be Bhakti. We must pray to the God who is in all. Who is that God? Love is God. Live in Love. He alone is the embodiment of Prema. For the sake of Prema we must develop Prema. This very Prema is the form of the Paramātma. That is the form of Bhakti. That is the reflection of divinity. That is the goal of the Ānanda of the Ātma. So Ānanda is in us ourselves. We need not search for it somewhere out there. Where are we to search for God, who is everywhere? Searching is madness. You must turn your gaze inward. Check all the feelings that run outward and turn them towards God. Regard all karma as done for the pleasure of God. This alone is the great learning. We must study this vast learning. We must experience this indescribable Ānanda. We must experience the unbroken effulgence. This is the chief goal of life. This is the path of true life. We must go on loving for the sake of Prema. This is the way of life. With Bhakti of this kind we must foster Prema; merely performing such karmas as pūjās, rites and pilgrimages, crying ‘Bhakti, Bhakti’, can never be Bhakti.
