But in former times Duryodhana showed himself as Duryodhana, Śakuni as Śakuni, Dharmaja as Dharmaja. But today Dharmaja shows himself as Duryodhana. The name is Dharmarāja. Look at his humility and obedience, and they make him appear most righteous. Look at his feelings and conduct, and they show him to be a Śakuni. Everyone appears to be a devotee. That they are people mixed with wicked blood and not devotees shows plainly in their behaviour. If they are truly devotees, are they doing the work that devotees should do? Devotees in name only. There is a proverb in Telugu. ‘Our whole street is brahmins, and the hen cannot be found,’ they said, it seems. If the whole street is brahmins, where would the hen go? If they truly are devotees, would there be any room there for unrest of this kind, for wickedness, for abuse? So when we think of ourselves as devotees, we must prove it in all the conduct of Bhakti. Only then will the divinity that is everywhere become manifest to us. Whichever way we look, oneness itself must be our outlook. In whatever place, a man's faith must show itself as faith. But today the principles of Bhakti are turning the other way. That is why they are becoming fools who cannot understand divinity. The cause of this is selfishness and self-interest, nothing else. Greed and possessiveness are the root causes of this. When wicked thoughts enter man, any change at all becomes possible for him. How cruel they are ready to become! This is not what distinguishes humanness. We must make the effort it takes to taste the holiness of divinity. In such a principle we must bring out even the divinity that belongs to our worldly life.
When many kinds of personality are manifested at one and the same time, materialists do not accept this. The materialists' faith has kept within certain bounds. Each one's faith keeps to its own sphere; it stays within its own limit. Take a chemist. In his own subject he is accomplished. A very great man. A man of experience who has done great research. But chemists do not know physics so well. Just for that, can one criticise physics?
