Passage 5

In plain words

But through the influence of today's times and of the conditions of place and time, this has been turning into its opposite. Though he has become only a little educated, out of mere Ahaṅkāra and show he struts about puffed up.

Learning bestows humility; from humility comes worthiness; from worthiness wealth, from wealth Dharma; from Dharma a man gains this world and the next.

So humility, awe and faith alone are the true adornment of students and of the educated. The moment he takes some B.A. of two letters, or some M.A., or some Ph.D., no reins are enough to hold him. In short, its effect is this: it means there is no control of the senses. One who had control of the senses they used to call dama. But for those who are full of this Ahaṅkāra and show, dama, the moment it turns backwards, takes the form called mada. Once mada swells, sākṣara turns into rākṣasa. So today they are using all the titles of those days in the opposite way. So all of today's educated men have taken on nothing but the form of a rākṣasa, and do the world many kinds of harm. The country suffers more harm from educated fools than from the ignorant who have no learning. So today's education is sinking into a state where it has no value at all. So excellent students and excellent teachers are urgently needed today. Today teachers must strive to plant their sacred feelings, this learning, in the very hearts of tender, pure boys and girls.

The fields of these boys and girls are sacred and rich in substance. That is why only when we sow the seeds called virtue and character in this field does it grow ever so much and can we give a fitting fruit. The hearts of grown-up children are barren fields. Though we sow seeds ever so sacred, ever so excellent, in such barren fields, we cannot reap from them the results we hoped for. Grown-up children are like snake gourds gone hard. No one can straighten a snake gourd that has hardened. Only while it is a tender snake gourd, when a suitably heavy stone is tied to it, does it grow straight and develop.
