Passage 11

In plain words

We must give the students a sacred spiritual vision. Our aim is to show forth even the worldly within the moral, dhārmic and spiritual paths, and to give the country students who are, in this way, an example to all. In such a case, at such a time, it is not right at all to compare other colleges with our colleges. We want no comparisons. We will enjoy what is ours. When we act just as we please without giving such a path the least thought, what use are these games that come once a year? In the old days, sports in the college meant, oh, what joy they felt! What delight they felt! Look at these students, and not the least trace of that joy shows on their faces. There is no one to give them zeal and encouragement. In such a state of things, how can joy, joy, come to Swami? From the very beginning I have been saying, ‘All my property is the students.’ If there is no joy in the students, what joy is there for me? In how many ways I spent money to have the things they need for their games brought for them! Even so, who is the root cause of this low spirit in the students? The professors, the lecturers and the officers: they are the root cause. If the officers do not understand, the professors at least should tell them. ‘How are these physical instructors working? How are they teaching the students what they need?’ No one looks into this. And what can they do on their own? If the officers call them and say, ‘Do this, do that,’ they are ready to carry it out.

‘No one has come for me; you have come for yourselves!’

Not in games alone but in teaching too a special method must be begun. It is no use coming prepared on some subject, talking in the class and going away. “How are the students fitting into this atmosphere, in which subject are they weak, where are they losing heart, in what are they struggling, unable to understand”: you must meet them now and then and clear all their doubts.
