Passage 7

In plain words

We must at least make an effort at that kind of thing. Otherwise, if you do not like it, sit. Sit remembering whatever you like. But if, not liking it, you go about coughing and all this, it is like what rowdies do. For our students these are perverse notions, they can never be good ones. They sit at bhajan. Whenever you look, they are moving about and disturbing everyone's attention. Why should you move? Have you not that much steadiness? If at this age you cannot control your body even this much, you are slaves not masters. He alone who has controlled his own senses is master. He alone who keeps his own body in check is master. He alone who keeps his own Buddhi in the right state is master. Otherwise, slave to sense. Slave to body. Slave to Buddhi. He becomes a complete slave to the world. So you must become masters, not slaves.

So where must this begin? Where all the children gather: that is, it must begin in the Hostel. If discipline were truly right in the Hostel, there would be no chance of wavering in any way, whether in this bhajan or in the Institute. So this discipline is going bad first in the Hostel itself. When I too come to Prasanthi Nilayam for bhajans, I watch. There too they sit in front at the bhajan. All the women are there. Laughing, talking, moving about: in this way they behave worse than monkeys. So only when you are steady in the hostel can you be steady in the Institute. Only when you are steady here can you be steady in the Mandir too. You go bad first in the hostel. Everyone, the elders along with the children, laughing and chatting: with all this, discipline has first of all vanished in the hostel. You fancy, somehow, that you are in a Hostel. But this is sheer foolishness. The hostel is where you must become children who are right in every way. It is turning into a hostel with no one to look after it. There is no fitting punishment for wrongdoing. Here and there, even when they fight with one another, no one takes action. Are these people dead or alive? Why should we not take action over this? I did not found the Institute for study. We did it for Discipline. Nor did we found it in any way for money. That is why we take not a single naya paisa as fees. When we give them scholarships, feed them, give them clothes, look after them, do so much, why should we not punish such people if they do wrong? If in this way we go on forgiving one wrong, it breaks out into many wrongs.
