In plain words
This body, made of nothing but earth, water, fire and air, is inert, not of the nature of Caitanya, is it not? Even inert iron: when it comes near a magnet, the magnet makes it move. In the same way, because the principle of the Ātma, whose form is consciousness, is within, this inert body too moves through that Caitanya. To think on that account alone, ‘I am of the nature of Caitanya’, is madness. So Caitanya stays within and has every kind of work done through this inert body.
He enjoys all things for the satisfaction of his own Ātma, not for the satisfaction of those things. This is a flower. I am smelling this flower. I have kept this flower in my hand for my own sake, not for the flower’s sake. I eat food for my own sake; I do not eat for the food’s sake. Everything for my sake, for my sake... Who is that ‘I’? That is what we must inquire into. That is the principle of the Ātma. We do everything for the satisfaction of the Ātma. But not for the satisfaction of the body. When we recognise this truth and live it, all actions being done for the pleasure of God, that itself is the easy path to control of the senses. Do any work. It is all God’s work. Work should be transformed into worship. No object is lasting. They are all momentary. So, when we want to recognise this eternal, true principle of the Ātma, the first sādhana is for us to do every action with the attitude of offering it to the Ātma. Actions done only out of the body’s desire or self-interest, for the sake of a nature like that, all go very far from God. The day we cast off these chains called selfishness and self-interest and do our actions in the spirit of God, which is our own true nature, that is real heaven for us, real freedom, real liberation. Only then will this gatekeeper called śama welcome us and let us in.
That is, one who has achieved such control of the senses is most dear to God. He is near and dear. After all, no one has the right to stop one of the house at any gate! A guard can stop only an outsider or a stranger who comes to the gate. When princes, those related to the king, the king’s kinsmen and the king’s brothers come, no one stops them. That is why, to enjoy a close bond of kinship with God, we must practise this control of the senses.
