In plain words
At the time of coming back from Laṅkā, Lakṣmaṇa takes hold of His feet and prays to Rāma: ‘Rāma! Anyhow, Bharata has taken away Your sandals. He goes on ruling Ayodhyā. Even if we go, we cannot but keep our father's command. Even if we go there, we must sit with our hands folded somehow before Bharata. When you look at this city of Laṅkā, it is very splendid. It is made all of gold. There is no lack of wealth, gold, goods or carriages. Vibhīṣaṇa, Sugrīva and Jāmbavān are at Your feet. So You could rule Laṅkā itself, could You not? Why go to Ayodhyā? he said. Jananī janmabhūmiś ca svargād api garīyasī, said Rāma. My mother who bore me, my motherland, are greater even than heaven, he said. My dear, your mother may be ugly. This person you see may be very handsome, well built and cheerful. But seeing outer beauty, seeing outer fortune, will you put away the mother who bore you? Whatever she may be, though ugly, though she begs for alms, a mother is a mother. My Bhārata may be a poor country. There may be none to shape the fortune it should have. Laṅkā may be beautiful with its fortune. But my mother is Bhārata alone. Laṅkā will never be my mother. With such faith Rāma taught Lakṣmaṇa. That is Rāma's way. That is the dharmaśāstra. That is Rāma's kingdom. So we must develop love of the country, Prema for the country. That is the true national character. Only when we have this National character can we foster our individual character too. Whatever field we enter, worldly, moral, spiritual or scientific, we must develop these two powers as our two eyes.
Students, wealth is not what matters. Character is the ground. Foster the qualities that please God. Foster the feelings that please God. Try to recognise the God who is in all. If God is pleased, the world is pleased. If you go against God, the world, for its part, is against you. A small example. Let me call a boy near and say, ‘This boy is very good’: from tomorrow everyone will go on praising him, ‘very good, very good’. If I so much as say ‘rowdy’, then everyone, from children to elders, will look down on him, ‘he is a rowdy, a rowdy’. So if you become slight to God, the whole country will look on you as slight. So a devotee said
If I am not Yours alone, Mother of the world, I become worthless in the world, Mother of the world,
‘If I am not Yours alone, I become low before the whole world, Mother, Mother of the world!’ so he prayed.
