Passage 8

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

For some time, true to the word he had given before the marriage, her husband did not stand in the way of her devotion. But later he grew weary of it. He restrained her, so that she would not go to the Kṛṣṇa temple. It was of no use. He had the temple doors shut, so that she could not go at all. The Rāṇā had built this temple. They could shut it. ‘The temple of my heart was built by no one. It is beyond anyone's power to shut it. Come, my mind, to the banks of the Gaṅgā and Yamunā!’ so she urged her mind. Her mind settled on Kṛṣṇa in Dvārakā. Along with her mind, her body too ran. Heedless of wind, rain and thunderbolts, she reached Dvārakā singing ‘Gopālā, Gopālā’. She entered the Kṛṣṇa temple. The doors closed. However many tried, however hard, they did not open. Mīrā went straight into the inner sanctum. ‘Kṛṣṇa! Plucking the tambura with one hand and striking the cymbals with the other, how do You think I can hold Your feet? Here is the tambura, here are the cymbals,’ and with that she let them go there: ‘Making śruti, rāga, tāla and words all one, I hold Your feet. I have no one else but You. You cannot leave me and go anywhere,’ she said, and struck her head hard. Crying ‘Kṛṣṇa!’ she fell down. She gave up her life. A light rose out of her and merged in Kṛṣṇa! The temple doors opened. Mīrā was gone, never again to be seen by the Rāṇā, who came riding his horses at a gallop! Not everyone can understand how holy Bhakti and prapatti are. Worldly ties may come and may go. The bond of Bhakti does not come and go.

Rādhā's question

Once, as Rādhā sat in the temple, a feeling came to her.

The door that will never be shut, and a call to open it!
