Passage 12

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Not old. It has no difference of caste, no difference of age. Nothing at all. It is always one and only one: so keep that one-letter I as your goal. That itself is present everywhere. To recognise that oneness present everywhere, that is the true principle of the Ātma.

Many people did not hear what was said on Guru Pūrṇimā day. Our Vice-Chancellor told me to say it once more. I have no habit of learning things by heart. I speak as each moment comes. If I am to say the same thing now, it will not come to me. Some people fix on one set method. They learn it by heart. Wherever they go, they beat out the same thing, like a drum. It does not come to me that way. I have to speak then and there, seeing the people, taking account of the time and the occasion, and taking account of the purpose of the one who asked.

But all my words are always filled with Advaita. Because there is no Dvaita, no second, here. Ekam eva advitīyaṃ brahma. What is, is one alone. In however many ways it is said, it must come back and reach that very place. When worldly matters are examined, there are kartā, karma and kriyā, taking shape as three. For Me here, kartā, karma and kriyā, the three together, are one. Only when speaking to these children must all this be kept to. There are some fools who cannot understand even this kartā, karma and kriyā.

A teacher came into the class. Telling them everything in it, he asked about kartā, karma and kriyā, as the occasion called for. Then he said, "Who is the kartā, boy?" That boy had not heard this lesson. He was asleep, poor fellow. Not knowing anything, he said, "Sir, since you are asking, you are the kartā." He woke up another one. He said, "What is kriyā, boy?" He said, "Since you are telling us many things, those things are kriyā." He called on yet another. He said, "Who is karma, boy?" "What is karma?" he said. "Sir, though we did not like to listen to your speech, we had to listen. This is our karma," he said. That is, there are students today who do not know what karma is, what kartā is, what kriyā is. For such students such teachers are just right. But I know nothing of that kind. Wherever I go, it is Advaita alone. What is, is one alone. So in however many ways I travel, I reach that one goal.

So, students! MY LIFE IS MY MESSAGE. If you follow me and understand that Advaita fully, you will have made the whole world pure. When we understand Advaita, attachment and hatred run off without a word. So to keep this Ahaṅkāra away and to control the sense of mine to some extent, we must follow Advaita.
