In plain words
So long as we develop outer sight we are beasts, nothing but beasts! The day we develop inner feelings, that very day we are emperors. If you are one who has conquered the senses, you become king of kings over all kingdoms. At least a few such people must come forth in our Institute. Only when, along with these studies, there comes Viveka, along with Viveka discernment, along with discernment humility, and along with humility learning too, does man shine. Learning without humility is not learning. Learning without vidyata is not learning. What use is it merely to have knowledge? Better a useful Ajñāna than a useless knowledge. That is why I say from time to time:
Why ten acres of land that grows no crop? A little good land is enough.
We need not hanker after big, big degrees. However many degrees you have, when they are not in practice you are a dunce! What are these studies? Even dogs learn skills when they are taught. In olden days even a buffalo recited the Veda, they say! When taught, do monkeys not ride bicycles; do animals not play all kinds of games in the circus? Do skills merely learned become learning? We must put it into practice, and live as an ideal for others. That is true education. We must lead an ideal life. What kind of ideal? The highest ideal. We must live as men, and lead our lives as men. We must die as men. Born as men, we must not die as demons. So if we develop sacred saṅkalpas, we change into forms of God. This is not something we practise only for some little while; we must follow it all our life long. When we wish to gain this firm faith, we must believe the truth that we are a part of God. You must not think that God is separate from you.
