In plain words
Students! Above all, you must transform your hearts. You must shape every one of your actions into sacred actions. From your words to your conduct, everything must be sacred. Only the education learned with this is right education. In this education humility is most necessary. To cultivate humility of this kind is man's chief duty. Only when we cultivate purity of this kind can we easily reach, can we attain, the place that is eternal and true. So, first of all, we must bend our body. We must master the senses. We must bring the Manas to an end. Only then does the right place come to us. Only then can we attain real Ānanda. So, Bend the body. Mend the senses, End the mind. This is the essential way to attain Immortality. If we want Immortality, we must root out Immorality. What is the way to Immortality? Removal of immorality is the only way to immortality. Students must stay very careful, and within their own lives we must develop this. We must hand it on to others. Only then can we become those who have lived education as an ideal and handed it on.
Not only the students but the teachers too must recognise this truth, and we must foster close bonds of kinship with one another. Truly, human values are not things that we learn. They are natural powers. Not for students alone: this humanness is most necessary for every man born into the world. Just as we hope others will respect us, in the same way we must first respect others. But we hope others will respect us, while we are not respecting others. So this is not one way traffic. give and take. give and take. Whatever way of being towards others we think good, that good we must develop in ourselves. Before we tell others, we must first practise it ourselves. Spreading and teaching grow only through that practice. If, without practice, we only preach, it becomes nothing but laughable. So, be it one thing or two, we must practise it and strive to hand it on to others as an example. We must keep this ideal above all in view. When this grows in these students, little by little there will be the chance for it to stand as an example to the whole universe.
The studies we pursue are not merely for a livelihood; we must also recognise the truth that they are for the supreme goal of life. Education should be for life not for living. We must reflect well on this truth every moment.
