In plain words
Satya, Dharma, Ahiṃsā, Śānti and Prema: these are man's five life-breaths on earth. Among the five life-breaths, reckon Prema the highest; so make Prema firm in the heart. Today's learning is all for gathering wealth; all learning that is whole has come to nothing. Do teachings of many kinds give out a bird's chatter? The word of Sai is the true path.
Embodiments of the divine Ātma!
What must stand first in human society is humanness. A society with no humanness in it becomes a millstone round man's neck. However many kinds of learning you study and however many degrees you receive, do not rest content with that alone; along with it, you must strive to grow in humanness too. As far as humanness grows, so far do society and the nation also prosper. As sacred as humanness is, so sacred an act is it to nourish it. For this, concord and harmony are essential. Society shines only when there is accord and harmony among the various spheres.
To preserve, in keeping with the times, the ancient traditions that shine as eternal truths in daily life, and to bring them into harmony: that is the chief learning of today. Humanness makes accord and harmony grow. It nourishes the qualities in man. It makes humanness blossom. Humanness is not something we can invent for ourselves. Nor is it something we earn anew. It is our very nature. It is our own true form. Such humanness, eternally true, we are today forgetting. Only when we develop such humanness can we receive the right to be called man.
Just as we throw away a thing that is rotting, so society casts out the people who have done wasted deeds. What is the bond between society and us? Why should we live for the sake of society? What authority has society over us?
