In plain words
By merely reading through the whole mass of the śāstras, is the thick darkness of Ajñāna cut away? Learning with no practice, here on the earth, though it fills it, what fruit does it bear? Nothing but a round zero. Longing to win the fortune of the sight of Brahman, where do you go searching, foolish mind? It is within you; go there. This word of Sai is the word that makes the truth known.
Embodiments of the divine Ātma!
The Veda is the root of Dharma. The Veda shines forth in the form of yajña. The fulfilment of yajña is itself the goal of the Veda. The basis of yajña is the Veda. All the yajñas, every one of them, have come forth from the Yajurveda. The root yas means the worship of God, and giving. The very words that came from this root are the Yajurveda. It is this Yajurveda that inquired in many ways into the rites of karma, the yajñas, the yāgas and the rest, and brought them forth for the welfare of the world. When should these yajñas be performed? To establish the knowledge of time, of what its proper time is, the Yajurveda gave, first of all, the science of jyotiṣa. What sets out the knowledge of time is the science of jyotiṣa. How should the fire-pit for the homa be built on this altar of yajña? Out of the inquiry into what material it should be built with, it first of all brought into being a science for this. That is the science of vāstu. So that the words of the mantras might be uttered in their right state, it also brought into being for this what is called the science of grammar. This Yajurveda devised the science of jyotiṣa, the science of vāstu and the science of grammar. After that it resolved on these three chief yajñas and established them.
Havir-yajña, Soma-yajña and Pāka-yajña: these three are the chief ones. Only the vipras who are rich in the śāstras, who have a love for the Vedas and are able to study the Vedas, are fit to perform these yajñas. But the Yajurveda was not content with this much, and so that ordinary householders, ordinary people, people who cannot recognise the Veda in any way, people who do not know the śāstras, might experience it in their daily lives, it established some more yajñas too.
