In plain words
By practice, tasks are accomplished on earth. "Where am I? Where is this society, where is this strength?": we must give no room at all to discouragement of this kind. If one sets one's mind to it, one can do anything. So the determination that is in man's saṅkalpa is of this kind. It is not that it is of that kind. Its power lives on even when the man dies. So we must make ourselves men who give an ideal life. Whatever karmas we do, we must offer them with the feeling that they are for the pleasure of God. Whatever we do, we must believe it to be service of God itself. Taking part in such services, we have lived for the sake of such services. In this, which is a great good fortune, we must think on it, practise this fortunate work in a fortunate way, and through it experience the fortunate principle of the Ātma. The principle of recognising oneself is itself the highest meaning of service. Once one has recognised oneself, one becomes everything oneself.
Embodiments of Prema! Today such service is needed more than ever. For the turmoil and unrest in the world, this will be a chance to give a peaceful atmosphere. All of you, come like brothers. We must not bring our life to its end merely as those brothers. We must reach the level of the Ātma. Beginning with the body made of food, we must enter the Ātma full of Ānanda. Life is annamaya; we must not sink in the annamaya. From the annamaya we must travel to the vijñānamaya. From this vijñānamaya we must enter the ānandamaya.
We must give up this petty, mean, passing selfishness. We must throw self-interest out of our aim. We must install the feeling of God itself in our heart. With the spirit of tyāga we must enter karma. From this very day we must make some effort toward the chance to put this very thing well into practice. And further, in the days ahead, tomorrow or the day after, we may inquire to some extent into the fruit of this service, the inner meaning of service and the goal of this service. Truly, nothing greater than this service is to be seen anywhere in this world at all. So we must dedicate our life to service itself. A man who does not serve is no man at all. He may be called lower than a beast. So we must not keep away from service. We must not give up service. Service itself is our breath of life. Service itself is our living. Service itself is our goal. I hope that you will strengthen this truth well in yourselves and become ideal servants in the services ahead, in this world; and blessing you, I bring My discourse to a close.
