Passage 1

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

The mind alone is what matters for Mukti; the mind alone brings hell and makes you lose yourself; the mind alone is the cause; wherever else you may be, neither house nor forest can give Mukti. For one whose mind is not in it, whether he stays in a temple or stays in the forest, what is gained?

Embodiments of the divine Ātma!

This body of the five elements, joined with the senses, is not separate from Manas. This body is nothing but an armour Manas has made for its own play. Manas alone is the root and support of all bodies. As unreal as the existence of a crop without water is, so the unreality of a body without Manas too comes to just such a wrong end. Only when every person recognises the nature of Manas and acts on it does it become possible to recognise its own true form. In the world, this Manas alone is the root cause of all dealings and all activities. In whatever way a school without a teacher, a temple without God, comes to nothing, in just that same way a body without Manas too becomes useless. Ordinarily people believe that this Manas is bound to the body, and they go through all sorts of trouble merely to feed this body. Believing this body alone to be the root cause of every enjoyment and every fortune, he is bound right within it. However many kinds of service man may do, he cannot attain a high state.

Manas is not simply like a clean white sheet of paper. In it are imprinted the saṅkalpas of many births. The fruit of many karmas too is imprinted in it. That is why this Manas is wholly made of saṅkalpa. In man's times of hardship and times of danger, these saṅkalpas stand ready to do him many kinds of help. When these are joined with good saṅkalpas, it carries man to any height, however high. From the seed of saṅkalpas alone springs the fruit called karma. From the seed of karma comes the fruit called habit. From this seed called habit alone arises the fruit called character. From this seed called character alone we receive the fruit called fortune.
