In plain words

When he had written the address and was handing it back to them, he would say, “God bless you.” But at some times he would say, “God is great.” At some other times he would say, “Trust in God.” But his life went downhill day by day. Merely staying alive became hard. But because his saṅkalpas were sacred, he went on rising day by day. In some time this very man became Prime minister of the British nation. That man was James Macdonald. And there are still so many people like this in the world; but some do not even have the good fortune to believe in such matters. Faith too is a good fortune indeed. Only the fortunate keep believing in such sacred matters. Believing only in the sacredness of some histories or other, they try to make their lives a striving after it. Yet even in the present age there are many persons who have shown the power of such sacred saṅkalpas before our eyes.

Of two brothers who lived in a small village in the Madras State, the elder brother had many bad qualities, and through good conduct he entered into good deeds. But his was a poor family. The second fell in with wicked men, wasted all his time, and kept doing all his deeds impurely. Bad company is had very easily. Satsaṅga does not come to us so easily. Even if you only push a boulder off a hill with your foot, down it falls. But to carry a boulder that lies below up onto the hill is very hard. In just the same way, for us to gain a high state is extremely hard. To slide down into a low state is easy. So this brother fell in with the wicked and in some time was ruined. Through the urging and the egging-on of these wicked friends, he took up some enmity against his elder brother. In the end he brought a suit even over the one small house there was, and dragged his elder brother to court. But in truth it was a house the elder brother had earned by himself. It was not their grandfathers', nor their fathers'. Dragging him to court unjustly, he put his elder brother through many kinds of suffering. Some of the lawyers in it bent for the sake of this money and made the case brought in this court fail. In court the elder brother lost. “Is there no time at all for Satya? Is there no room at all for Dharma?” Brooding and brooding on this without end, he gave up his life. He had a son and a wife. That mother too suffered greatly; she took the son and, meaning somehow or other to bring that son up, came and settled in the city of Madras. With no food to eat and no house to live in, the two of them suffered in every kind of way.
