In plain words
We must try to understand the power of saṅkalpas still better. Saṅkalpas travel from one person to another. Not only that: if we keep wishing evil to anyone, our saṅkalpas do him evil, and then come back to us ourselves and do us ten times more evil than they did to him. You think, “I am wishing evil on him.” “When will he be ruined, when will he go to waste, when will he fall?” so we think. No, no. However much we wished, ten times that much they come back to us ourselves and bring us to ruin. So we must not let bad saṅkalpas come near us at all. We must wish everyone well. We must love everyone. Of this I Myself am the witness. I love everyone. I love even the wicked. Those who revile Me, I love still more. To those who mock Me, I draw still nearer. From that I keep getting so much joy. That is why I say, “My life is My message.” With Me it is always sacrifice alone. Sacrifice alone; for Me there is never anything called enjoyment. Sacrifice itself is My enjoyment. So all you workers, do not become mere kings of enjoyment; become kings of sacrifice, kings of yoga. We must sustain society. You who have the hope, ‘We must experience the greatness of society,’ offer this ‘mine, mine’ up to Īśvara, and enter society. In this gathering especially, there is one thing all must know. Let us do service as far as our strength allows. We need not put loads beyond our limit on our heads. For this service both body and mind are needed. The good saṅkalpa that it must be done. A body that has the right strength and capacity to follow that saṅkalpa. Just this much; beyond it there is no connection at all with wealth, gold, possessions and vehicles.
Only because we give this wealth a place is all our strength wasting away. Will-power wastes away still more. A kind of difference of opinion is growing among persons. This wealth itself is the root cause of all our decline. Yet for a householder in daily life, wealth is indeed most necessary. If you ask how far that wealth should go: we put boots on our feet. Only when those boots are the right size is it easy for us to walk well. If those boots are a little loose, walking is very hard indeed. If those boots are tight, walking is hard too. So if wealth is too much, it is only a loss to us. If wealth is very little, it is hard too. To live, and to give a little to anyone who comes to the house: just this much is enough for us. The very people who have it cry, ‘Wealth, wealth,’ and toil for wealth; the man becomes the slave of slaves and makes of his life a wasted life. Push this greed far away. However much you earn, one day or another you must leave it behind. Why do we strive so hard for such a thing?
