In plain words
It kept teaching us to believe in the divinity in each and every one. But they do not respect their mother and father. They do not trust their gurus. There is no Bhakti for God at all. They have no trust even in themselves. How can one who has no Self confidence attain Self satisfaction? How can one who has no Self satisfaction make Self sacrifice? How can one who cannot make Self sacrifice attain Self realisation? Walls without a foundation, a roof without walls: we are living in a house without a roof. We have no support whatever. Man today is losing even his self-confidence. Moment by moment man is driving himself out of his mind. We must push such doubts far away. We must build up faith. We must grasp divinity. Within such a principle we must learn the education called humanness. So today's studies must not be merely for filling the belly. Having merely provided for one life, one must grow into a person who offers an ideal life.
That learning is not for the belly, that you should study for wisdom: the one who knows the secret of learning, the very embodiment of Satya, is the eternal Guru. Teaching the principle of Prema, instilling affection and equality, the one who has made humanness known, the very embodiment of Prema, is the true Guru.
Gurus who impart such affection and equality along the right path are most essential for us today. But equality and affection are to be seen nowhere today. One does not love even one's own brothers in the right way. What is the real meaning of what we call brother? All our fellow men are our brothers, every one. The reason is that all are God's own children. Every one who is a child of that God is truly a brother or a sister. It was with just this in view that Jesus too spoke. “All are one My dear son be alike to everyone,” He said. We are making no conscious effort at all to achieve this kind of principle, this broad feeling. “If you wish to come, is there no road at all? If you wish for it, will compassion itself not come?” he said. So, if you want to, you can do any amount. Without even trying, you succeed in so many things that should not be done. But the work you ought to do, whatever it is, you do not build up śraddhā for it. So, the work we must do: our careful examination of the lasting and the passing, which is Satya and which is Asatya, which is fit to be done and which is not fit to be done; this discrimination power is the very Buddhi within us.
