Passage 8

In plain words

Today we must develop such a sacred Buddhi. Gandhi too said just this: Sabko sanmati de Bhagavān. That all should have good Buddhi.

Today we need not develop a new religion. We need not foster a new system of education. We need not create a new society. Men and women with good and sacred minds and hearts are what we need most today. Sacred minds and hearts are needed today. Whatever kinds of effort we make to solve the problems that have arisen today, there will be no gain. It is not the man that has to change. The mind must change. If the man changes without the mind changing in this way, what is the use? Today we must keep our frame of mind under proper control. People are letting the mind run loose. We must not follow the desires of the mind in the least. The reason is that the mind keeps racing about in disorder. There is no limit to it.

The man who takes the mind for his support falls lower than a beast and comes to ruin; the wise man who takes Buddhi for his support becomes Paśupati: so spoke the Lord of Parthi.

We must make Buddhi our support. The very moment the mind is carried away by the wish to do some work, we must not plunge into that work. We must hand it over to Buddhi. Then Buddhi carries out the enquiry, “Is this good or is it bad? May it be done now, or should it not be done?” After a decision has been reached in that enquiry, we must enter into the work. What use is it to have Buddhi, if this discrimination is not made? Though it is there, it is of no use whatever. What fruit is there in jasmines blooming in the forest? What fruit is there in a parrot preening in a cage? If we have Buddhi and still do not use it, what use is it to have Buddhi? So we must lead our Buddhi along the right path and grow into an ideal student.

We must respect all. We must love others. In the right spirit we must show our life to be an ideal. Selfishness and self-interest must not be in us at all. We live in society. Only if society is well are we well. If there were no society, our life would come to no more than that. So your good and your bad all rest on society itself. So we must always wish for the welfare of society and the progress of society. This is precisely what a broad heart is. These sacred feelings must grow day by day in the hearts of students.
