Passage 11

In plain words

Our vision and our feelings too must rest on the highest principle. The ox that was a beast thought of God, and by God's glance it turned into Nandi. The monkey, by constantly remembering the Name, turned into the worshipful Hanumān. Prahlāda, born a rākṣasa, turned into an embodiment of the Divine. So when a stone like this turned into a woman, when a beast turned into God, when a bird turned into God, why can man not change into man? The distorted intellects in men alone are the cause of this, not true divinity. For every sorrow, for good or for bad, man's mind alone is the cause. If this mind of ours thinks someone is bad, it believes him to be nothing but bad. Though he is a bad man, if it likes him, it makes him out to be nothing but a good man. Both of these belong only to likes and dislikes; they are not the good or the bad of that person. On the day he comes into wealth, man defies even the Lord of Kailāsa. When we have close ties of kinship with one another, whatever things they may be, we think them good. When any difference of feeling arises in that, we think even the good to be nothing but bad. So all this rests on our likes and dislikes. So we must at all times show our likes to be sacred. Students! We must not follow a special path in matters of education alone; we must put it to use in daily life, in our work in society, and in the way we live out our natural feelings too. So, granting ourselves the Viveka that befits education, we must make our daily life a useful life, an ideal life, a sacred life, and through this make our life fulfilled. I hope and I bless that all students will very soon take a vow to revive the culture of Bhārata, rich in its ancient traditions, take part in the service of society, and take a vow to spread both the progress of our Institute and its ideals throughout Bhārata, and to carry on its propagation and teaching; and first of all, honouring your mother and father and regarding your blood, your food, your head as their gift, we must look after them with gratitude. We must make them happy.
