Passage 10

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

There is no Bhakti, no Jñāna higher than service. It does not matter even if you do not take up a job. Enter society and take part in the service of society. You know the story of Abou Ben Adhem. He was always doing service to society. It is just such people that God loves. Constantly just loading and unloading, eating and sitting about: this breeds laziness. It drives humanness away. It leads into demonic nature. For having been given the body, we must dedicate this body to helping others. Only when we take part in services of this kind do we become people who have experienced this education within what is sacred.

How things stand in the country today is not unknown to you. Remembrance of the Name of God is a great support for us. Here is a small example that students today must take note of. If you want to say whether a thing exists or not, whether it is good or not, first you must enquire carefully into that thing. There is no meaning at all in saying that a thing which does not exist, exists. Nor is there any ground at all in saying that a thing which exists does not exist. So, to say that what exists does not exist, and to say that what does not exist exists: these are words without meaning. This is a tumbler. It has a form and a name. Now, if you are asked, “Is there a tumbler here?”, you can say there is not. But to say that there is not, we must have known about this tumbler, must we not? Now, when you put this tumbler there, you can say, “This tumbler is here.” To say that it is here or to say that it is not, you must first have recognised the nature of this tumbler. In just the same way, to say whether God exists or does not exist, only if you know about God can you say He does not exist. So even in saying God does not exist, it must be just as though God exists. The reason is: only when one knows of what is called God can one say that He is not there. Otherwise, of whom can one say that he is not there? One who exists may be absent from a place. Not having Him himself, he does not know his own truth; if He is not there for him, is He not there for us? They say that the very thing which exists does not exist. ‘It is not’ and ‘it is’: these belong to a truth already known, not to a truth unknown. In this modern education we can say it in English too. We say, “There is no God.” ‘There is’ came first. ‘No God’ came after. So he is calling the very thing that exists non-existent; to call non-existent what does not exist, he has no authority at all. There is no meaning at all in saying that what does not exist does not exist, is there? One has no authority at all to say of what one has not seen, of what one has not experienced, either that it is not or that it is. So if we wish to reach the sacred divine principle, we must develop in ourselves the true principle of God.

Today, if morality and honesty are to grow in us, we will find them on no other path but the spiritual path alone.
