Passage 2

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

The people of Bhārata too have turned some of their attention to this civilisation and are building their whole aim on it alone. This is a great misfortune.

With Mount Meru standing there in blazing splendour, why search for silver and gold? With the wish-fulfilling tree standing there, giving the fruit you long for, why this fondness for the flowers of the backyard? With Kāmadhenu standing there, giving milk when asked, why pay money to buy a cow?

What is not in Bhārata is not to be found in any other country. To forget this Bhārata, in which every auspiciousness, every virtue and every power are contained, and to revile it, saying merely "this Bhārata"; to look on Bhārata as a laughing-stock; to forget the culture of Bhārata and try in some measure to criticise it: this is the misfortune of the people of Bhārata.

Truly, the great good fortune of the people of Bhārata cannot be measured out as this much or that much. But to enjoy it, fitness too is essential. You may have scholarship. You may be a learned man. You may be powerful. But however many strengths you may have, when spiritual strength itself is missing, this seems nothing but useless.

You may expound the Vedas and Śāstras and have the learned study them, and you may study them yourself; you may have sacrifices, rites and tapas performed by those entitled to them, and you may perform them yourself; you may teach others to go to the holy places on earth, and you may go yourself; you may give the noble teaching in the sciences of eight-limbed yoga, and you may practise them yourself.

But to restrain the body and the senses, to steady the mind and attain the principle of the Ātma, is possible for no one. Only those who have recognised its principle become entitled to recognise the great good fortune of the people of Bhārata.

All the people of Bhārata are indeed children of one mother. Their regional languages may differ, but all of them do belong to one and the same family. The people of Bhārata, all of them, are of one race only, the human race.
