In plain words
He was taking the grandson along to help him. Some man they knew came towards them. "What is this, sir? The two of you are going along doing such a foolish thing! Why are both of you walking? When there is a donkey beside you, someone could sit on it and go, could he not?" he said. Then, thinking, "I am an old man, after all; what he said is true," he climbed onto the donkey himself. By the time they had gone a little further, another man they knew came. "What is this, sir? You are so old, and you make the little boy walk! Why not let him ride?" he said. At that moment that seemed quite true, quite right. He got down. He put the boy up. They went a little further. "What is this, one walking and one sitting? This is a donkey; if both of you sit, it will carry you," they said. Thinking, "That is true, is it not?", both of them climbed up. Its back bent; the weight was too much. Someone else came towards them. "What is this, sir! It is a dumb creature. If you load such a weight on it, what is to become of it? It will die, will it not? This is foolishness," they said. Both got down. It had no strength to walk. Then another man came. When he said, "How am I to take this donkey along? I am an old man," the man said, "Oh, I will give you a pole; tie its two legs, put this pole through the middle, and the two of you carry it." The two of them together were carrying the donkey, with great difficulty. By the time they came near a village, all the village children laughed. They made an uproar. At this uproar the donkey took fright. It twisted this way and that, and as they were going over the bridge it thrashed about so much that grandfather and grandson both fell into the river.
In this way, if we go along with whatever anyone says, we will end up in this river. We must follow our own heart. Follow your master's command. You must experience your heart's touch. You must not be so innocent as to listen to all the tale-bearers' words. On one word, on one path: so we must follow it. So those who are Presidents must set up a small committee in each district and work. We have reduced it, cut it down, and neatly made it three. One, Service, the path of service. The second, spiritual, the spiritual path. The third, the path of education. Prior to these three, I have told you: Love of God: this is most necessary. The second, fear of sin. Today we shout loudly, "morality." Where is the support for this morality? After reading as many books as they like and taking degrees that weigh down the head, how many people in the world have no morality! It does not come from learning. Fear of sin comes only to one who has love of God. Morality comes only to one in whom these two come together. That is morality. If there is no love of God, he turns into a mere fool, a mere beast. He loses his humanness itself. You know many of them.
