Passage 14

In plain words

"Bhavati bhikṣāṃ dehi," he said. Then this daughter-in-law, thinking, "I may not go against my mother-in-law's order and give," said, "There is nothing; go on your way." Just as she was saying that and sending him off, the mother-in-law, coming in, saw it. When the daughter-in-law had said there was nothing and told him to go, the beggar was going away, poor man. Then the mother-in-law went up to him and asked, "What did that girl tell you?" "She gave me no alms, madam; she told me to go and come again," he said. "What authority has she to say 'Go and come again'? Chī. Why should you listen to her words? Come back to my house," she said. Thinking, "Aha, this mother-in-law is going to give me something, surely," he came. The mother-in-law went inside and did not come out for half an hour. Then she came out. "There is nothing more; go and come again," she said. What does that mean? It is the Ahaṅkāra that says the mother-in-law alone has the authority to tell the beggar "Go and come again," and not the daughter-in-law. What the two of them did was one and the same. He got not even this much alms. In the same way, among these women, each says to the other, "Authority is mine," "Authority is yours," and in the end they give up the alms that is work. So we must work together in harmony, so that such feelings do not come again.

As Indulal Shah said, from December 1st we must develop the fitting changes and rearrangements in the right way. One more matter. It used to go on before under the name World Council. Since things were then going on only a little at a time, there was the chance to follow it in that way. Now in foreign countries they have grown more than in Bhārata. For one person to carry the whole responsibility is not possible. So we have set up one President for the whole of Bhārata, handed this responsibility for the various countries to the people of those countries themselves, as suits each, and today we have removed this thing called the World Council. So it will not run under this name any more. It is very good that the people of each country, there too, as we have in Bhārata, gather five or six people, and go on doing it as suits the responsibility of that country, its climate, and their own way. But if each is left to himself, this will turn into chaos. So, from there too, they must keep letting India know of the ways that are followed there. Whatever ways we follow in Bhārata, they too, in the light of the conditions of their own country and time, must develop those ways to some extent. So from there too they must let India know those conditions. That office is now the Praśānti Nilayam office. These changes were made for this reason: some changes had to be made to give the growing Sai organisations still more encouragement and zeal; do not think at all of any other reasons. So you must not have other feelings and waste time with some needless words or other, and on top of that you must not cause the slightest harm to the name and standing of the organisations.
