Passage 15

In plain words

Do not take it otherwise. For this there are a few tips too, a few ways to follow. It is when we walk this way and that with our heads raised that crazy feelings and thoughts that should not come enter into us. Test it well and see. When you walk, go along with your eyes cast down. You will make great progress. In this, some advantages and some helps come about. We come to do good turns too. While we go along looking down, there may be thorns there, or something else that can hurt us. We can pick them up and put them aside. In this way we will have done good to others. We will have cleaned the road too. There will be no room for crazy feelings. By always going along looking somewhere or other, seeing that thought and this thought, the thoughts from it all enter your head. So go along with your eyes looking down. All of you know it well: the kite has wings. But though it moves about at a great height, it keeps its gaze downward. When a bird with wings keeps its gaze below even while flying in the sky, tell Me, how fallen a man becomes who moves on the earth and has no eye on the earth! All of you know it well, the children who go about in town. They go along the road, travelling on motorcycles, or bicycles, or in cars. But where are their eyes? Their eyes are on the film wall-posters, here and there. Because of that, accidents happen more. That itself is the root cause of these mishaps. This is a sign of humility. It is a way to nourish discerning intelligence. For doing good to others this is the right thought. So it is a support for keeping all such bad feelings from entering us.

Not only this: words. We must speak only as much as is needed. By speaking beyond measure, all sorts of needless words come into it. Into these come all this, that one's affairs, this one's affairs. See to what your own affairs are; what have you to do with the affairs of others? If you keep your words in check like this to some extent, your thoughts too will grow into thoughts that are very high. We must always try to listen to good words. We must try to speak good words. We must try to see good things. Only then do good feelings come in us. What is seen is bad. What is spoken is bad. What is heard, besides, is bad. How can good thoughts come? So it is on these alone that our thoughts rest. So if your speaking and seeing are good, your thoughts will be good. If the thoughts are good, our deeds too will be good.
