In plain words

‘After the life has gone, one may burn them. For your sister-in-law, still alive, to go and sit in it: what a sacrifice!’ she said. Padmāvatī said, ‘This is not sacrifice. It is rashness. If the husband has truly gone, the wife must give up her life at once. That is natural; but to go by this sahagamana is rashness. This is a woman's rashness. This is not right,’ she said. Then: ‘She has spoken like this, has she? Let me test her,’ and the queen went some distance away and came back: ‘Mother, a tiger has mauled Jayadeva, and he has suffered terribly,’ she said. ‘Ah! Has Jayadeva gone?’ she said. At once she gave up her life. The queen was thrown into panic. ‘I only tried to test her this way, and such a calamity has happened!’: so she grieved bitterly. After some time Jayadeva and the king came home. Then the queen called the king aside: ‘I cannot bear this sin I have committed at all; cut off my head,’ she said. ‘You should change your own feelings; trying to test others is folly. The killing of a woman is a great sin; so I will not look at your face; I will take my own life,’ he said. ‘What use is there in having such a wife? She has taken the life of this sacred devotee’: so, ‘I will take my own life,’ he said. No one must try to test another. It is great folly. Why? Have you that power and that strength in you? You have not. Then where does the authority to test come to you from? So, to take his own life, he went to ask Jayadeva's leave. He came smiling to the body. He came there and looked at her. ‘How fortunate you are! You have merged in God; stay a sumaṅgalī,’ he blessed her. Then and there he sang twenty-four Gītagovindas. When these twenty-four Gītagovindas were complete and the twenty-fifth was beginning, she rose and sat up. The king went on spreading these Gītagovindas through his whole kingdom.

The Name of God, they said, gives back even a life that has gone. So nāmasmaraṇa is very sacred. When we do this nāmasmaraṇa we must do it with all our heart. Students! You must take a little care in this matter of nāmasmaraṇa. God is of every form. God is One who has many forms and many Names. But from now on you must go on making a few changes. People of other countries and many others besides have been criticising the culture of Bhārata in many ways, with misconceptions. So we must go on proclaiming this nāmasmaraṇa to the world from Prasanthi Nilayam, as an ideal. From tomorrow sing a few selected Names. Rādhākānta, Pārvatīramaṇa, Lakṣmīramaṇa: give up all names like these. There is nothing wrong in their being there; but feelings come into you: ‘When Śrī Rāmacandra stays with Sītā, when Īśvara stays with Pārvatī, when Viṣṇu stays with Lakṣmī, why should I not stay with my wife?’
