Passage 14

In plain words

We must hate no one. We must not be subject to suffering of any kind. Only when we foster qualities like these does true humanness show itself. If men call themselves human and wear the human form, yet behave like demons, it is as if soot were smeared on humanness itself. Are there not so many rich people? Are there not so many in power in the world? But is there Śānti in them? No, no. They may put on a show outwardly, but Śānti dwells only in a heart that has no desires. Śānti is man’s adornment. Śānti is man’s gentle sword. It is the sweet essence. This essence is the very form of rasa. ‘Raso vai saḥ’: Śānti, which is the very form of rasa, is within us. When you want to experience such Śānti and Ānanda, reduce your desires little by little. Develop the thought of God. Take part in works of service. Always think of yourselves as servants; do not turn into leaders and give room to Ahaṅkāra. True Ānanda lies only in the work of a servant. There is no Ānanda at all in leadership. That is not real authority.

We must not crave anything like that. Go into society. Serve the poor. Care for the poor and the helpless. Regard this as service to Nārāyaṇa. This is the right opportunity. Installing God in your heart, ‘Dil me Rām, hāth me kām’, you must be ready to keep God in the heart and to do work, acts of service, with the hands.
