Passage 7

In plain words

That is why today, through patience and sympathy, through sacrifice and generosity, we must develop the principle of Prema. If we are to achieve these, the Prema of God is vital. I said this very thing at the last Birthday. Love of God, Fear of Sin and Morality in Society. That is, daivaprīti, pāpabhīti, saṅghanīti. Our life must be bound up with these three alone. It is on this basis that the culture of Bhārata thought of the three crore gods in three forms and spread that through the whole land. So many gods does not mean gods set apart. Every single person is a form of a god! In the time of the Upaniṣads, they said, there were only 3 crore gods. But today there are 80 crore gods in Bhārata. They came to regard every single being as God. We must grow broad in every single matter. This is what we must achieve today. To achieve such sacred divinity, some firmness of body too is vital. To match it, strength of mind too is needed. There is not one task in the world that cannot be achieved through these two. The principle of Brahman is not some separate form. This whole world that appears, imagined in what is seen, rests on one single Ātma. That is the true principle of Brahman. That is the doctrine of Advaita. Names and forms may differ, but the padārtha is one! The parārtha is one! We must try to reach such a truth by the path of the Upaniṣads. What does Upaniṣad mean? ‘Upa’ means near; ‘ṣat’, sit. Sit close to God. Live close to divinity. It is by keeping far from divinity that men go to the ghosts. So we must stay near to divinity. There is no need to search for that divinity specially in some other country. Divinity is within oneself.
