Passage 5

In plain words

So the present must be good. What is past is past. Forget it, live in the present, and go forward with joy and with zest. This is what our educational institution must teach.

You must pass in both worldly and spiritual learning

Students must have the resolve, ‘I must study hard and earn good marks.’ Just because your marks have once gone down, you must not lose heart. Take fresh heart and work hard. You must hold to the resolve, ‘Even if they are lower now, I must earn good marks from here on.’ But the girl and boy students of today are not doing so. This is a weakness. If we become weak, a strong force will crush us down in every way. If we are strong, no force of any kind can do anything to us. So, with courage, keep both worldly and spiritual learning at your right hand and your left, and steer your life by them. There is no chariot without two wheels, no person without two eyes, no bird without two wings. Hematāraka vidyā, to be happy here, and Brahma vidyā, to be happy hereafter: we must pass in both. Of all learning, spiritual learning alone is true learning. The rivers are different, but the sea is where all the rivers meet. In the same way, spiritual learning is where all learning meets. ‘When all the rivers have met at Dhanuṣkoṭi, why do we need the saying that we must go to each river separately and bathe there? Let us bathe here in Dhanuṣkoṭi itself. We shall gain the merit of bathing in all the rivers,’ says Tyāgarāja.

You must all become ideal mothers. For a child the mother comes first. She is dearer than the father. ‘Nearer even than the mother is God,’ it has been said. God is more than all! Keep your mind on the Divine as the Mother and Father of the universe, serve your mother and father, and gladden their hearts. Tomorrow your children will gladden you. If today you fill your parents' eyes with tears, tomorrow your children will surely fill yours with tears. If you want to be happy in the life to come, gladden your parents now and live a life full of joy.
