Passage 5

In plain words

This ignorance is born of lack of discrimination itself. This lack of discrimination arises from Ahaṅkāra. This Ahaṅkāra springs from attachment. From this attachment, aversion begins. Because of all these, man does karma. Through these karmas we take up the birth that is the body. So when you do good deeds with the body, cut off attachment and aversion, root out Ahaṅkāra and drive away this ignorance and possessiveness, then you will shine as the embodiment of the Ātma. To be one with God, to experience it and to rejoice in it: that alone is the true duty of man. There is the ocean. Within this ocean there are three qualities: wetness, coolness and whiteness. In the waves that rise from this ocean, too, these same qualities are present. So the ocean is God, the very embodiment of Brahman. The waves in this ocean are the beings in this world. The wetness, coolness and whiteness in the ocean: all three of them are in the jīva too. They are in the waves too. Name and form differ. But the principle of the Ātma, joined with these qualities, is one and the same. So true spirituality is to recognise the truth that what is in everyone is the principle of the Ātma, and to live by it. To practise such a spiritual principle, rejoice in it, grow it and share it with all: that is our principle of service.

Service, service, service. But how should we do this service? If we do service with a worldly outlook, it becomes a cause of bondage. We must do it without expecting any kind of fruit. Service is giving, not taking. But today service is giving and taking. If I do which service, what fruit will I get; if I take part in which service, what fame will come to me. We should not take part in service at all for the sake of name and prestige, of fame and honour. We must do service with the feeling of oneness, "I am serving my own dear God alone." We should feel that we do it purely for our own inner contentment. We must give no room to the Ahaṅkāra that says, "I am serving someone; I am the one who serves, and that person is the one being served." Whatever service we do, we must do it with a feeling of Prema. This is true spirituality. We must enter into karmas of this kind. Work is worship. duty is God. This is our true duty. Today we are forgetting our duty. We expect the fruit of karma. Thereby we become bound. We fall prey to unrest.
