In plain words

When Kṛṣṇa went to Dvārakā, He told Arjuna too to come with Him. Arjuna stayed in Dvārakā 36 days. He asked Kṛṣṇa's leave to set out from there. ‘You cannot go now; stay a few more days,’ He said. Meanwhile an iron club was born in the Yādava clan. In the civil war that broke out among the Yādavas, all of them died. Arjuna brought the children and the old who were left, and all the gopīs, to Hastināpura. Kuntī's eyes had grown dim under the weight of her years. She was waiting for news of Arjuna. Arjuna came to his mother in sorrow, fell at her feet, wept aloud with a cry, and said, ‘Our life has left us and gone; Kṛṣṇa is no more.’ Then, crying ‘Kṛṣṇa!’, Kuntī Devī gave up her life. Dharmaja laid Kuntī Devī in his lap. He told Nakula and Sahadeva to make arrangements for the funeral rites. He told Bhīma to make preparations for setting out to the forest. He called Arjuna and told him to make arrangements for Parīkṣit's coronation. These three tasks had to be done at one time. What event could be more unfortunate than this? ‘This kingdom came to us through Kṛṣṇa. Every atom of us is Kṛṣṇa. So our life without Kṛṣṇa is worthless,’ the Pāṇḍavas felt. Even so, they performed the rites for Kuntī Devī and crowned Parīkṣit. After that Dharmaja made his mind firm with ‘Mātā nāsti, pitā nāsti, nāsti bandhu sahodaraḥ, arthaṃ nāsti, bhavaṃ nāsti, tasmāt jāgratta jāgratta,’ and set out on the great final journey. Dharmaja walked in front, and after him Arjuna, Bhīma, Nakula and Sahadeva, and Draupadī went walking on. On the way they went on, no one bound to anyone. There was no food or drink. When they had gone some distance, Draupadī gave up her life. She called out, ‘Dharmaja!’ Dharmaja did not answer. That is Vairāgya. In the same way Nakula and Sahadeva, Bhīma and Arjuna died one after another. This was a test. Dharmaja went on.
