In plain words
Happiness is passing; Ānanda is lasting
What must stand foremost in society are human values. The proper study of mankind is man. What is this humanness? Humanness is the united form of these three: mind, word and deed. This is what the world today calls Education in Human Values. We must try to recognise the inner meaning of EHV. What is the special worth of education? Is education only studying in schools and colleges, or in a university? The universe itself is a university. Every act a man does, from the moment he rises in the morning until he lies down at night, belongs to education! Doing all the actions human life needs is itself education. How are we to learn this education? We must learn it by making the three, mind, word and deed, one. 3H means Heart, Head, Hand. Education is the united form of these three: Thoughts, Words, Action. Today's learning is mere acquaintance with books! It goes only from the book to the head; we do not try to live it and experience it in practice. It goes as far as the Head, but it does not go to the Heart. The Head gives only passing happiness. From the Heart comes Ānanda. There is a great difference between happiness and Ānanda. Happiness is passing, but Ānanda is lasting. The Satya that is eternal, pure, hidden and unceasing has been called ‘Triguṇātītaṃ satyaṃ’. In Vedānta this very thing is called ‘Ṛtam’. But today we use this Satya in worldly dealings for the sake of a passing joy. ‘Nirguṇaṃ, nirañjanaṃ, sanātanaṃ, niketanaṃ, nitya, śuddha, buddha, mukta, nirmala svarūpiṇaṃ’: this is the true principle of the Ātma.
