In plain words
Whatever seed we sowed, that plant comes up again. Because that seed was sown before, that plant has now come up. Whatever food we ate, its belch is what comes. If we eat a mango, does the belch taste of cucumber? Never. So what we experienced before is what we must experience now, in the present. Whatever we do today, that same thing comes to us as the fruit in the future. So, keeping this present in view, we must try to do good works, think holy thoughts, speak holy words and do holy deeds.
Embodiments of Prema! Whatever else we believe or do not believe, we lose nothing by it. But if we do not believe in God, we lose a great deal. God is everywhere. All of you are embodiments of God. By not trusting yourselves you betray yourselves. You betray your own selves; God loses nothing. That is, only one who trusts himself can live in the world. One who does not trust himself has no chance to live even a moment. So trust yourselves. That is trust in God. Go here. Go there. ‘Do this pūjā’: I do not teach anything of that kind. Trust yourselves and take the vow, ‘I must walk the path of Satya’: there is no greater sādhana than that, no greater tapas, no greater wisdom. So we need not do any sādhanas. We need not do any pūjās. Do your own duty. You are living as householders. If you support your children, wife or husband, each of you the other, depend on no one, do not step into the path of adharma or into wrongdoing, and carry out your duty, there is no tapas greater than this. What is tapas? Going off to some forest, grazing on leaves and roots, head down and feet up as tapas: this is not tapas. Even if we go off into the forest there, our mind may come and wander about the village. What is the use of that? Even while we stay at home, if we keep our mind under control, this itself is the forest, this itself is true solitude. This itself is true Ānanda. So in this way we must carry out our duty. We must not speak bad words to anyone. We must not speak against anyone, My golden ones. God Himself is in everyone; whomever we revile, that is the same as reviling God. If anyone speaks bad words, we must not listen to them. In listening to them comes the fault of hearing.
