Passage 1

In plain words

Modern learning has grown without end; Ātma-vidyā has waned without limit. Satya and Dharma have all faded away; by this learning men have grown narrow of heart. The valour of talking too much has grown great; the valour of doing has waned and melted away. Life has grown heavy with show; this is all that the life of today's student comes to.

Students! Teachers! Lovers of learning!

This is the modern age. It is a time when boundless technical knowledge has blossomed. But this knowledge goes on teaching us only an outward civilisation. What today's students need is breadth of heart. Ripeness of heart. Purity of heart. This alone gives us the inner civilisation and culture. Along with the power of intellect, we must gain purity of heart. To shape man into one broad of heart is the fulfilment of education. It must not only nourish the principle of character through these studies; it must also give the brain its proper discipline. Only then does discipline take shape in our life. Learning without humility and Viveka is useless. All of today's modern studies simply stand far, far away from humility and obedience. For the sake of learning we must not lose character. To increase the wealth of good qualities is the chief aim of education. The world is being spoiled in so many ways through the very ones who are educated, more than through fools and the unlettered. The reason is that in this education there is not enough wealth of good qualities. Character is the chief life of man.

Today students must make due effort to live as Bhāratīyas. Today, through contact with foreign knowledge, we are losing the consciousness of Bhārata. We are moulding it into a merely artificial life.
