Passage 4

In plain words

The unreal within the real. We take this whole world to be real; … we experience it. But within this very reality a dream comes. But in that dream this reality seems unreal. Only as long as that dream lasts does … stay real. The moment one wakes from this dream, it seems … to that reality. 'The mansions and terraces seen in a dream are gone once the eyes open, are they not?' So … within the real it takes shape as something unreal. A dream is something unreal. Within that unreality another unreality keeps coming. You, within a dream, … another dream film: we are …. Our dream itself is something unreal. Within this dream you are seeing another dream. Seen in this …, within a single day it takes shape as unreal within the unreal itself. But the real within the real: this we can experience only in the state of deep sleep. The body in waking, the deep sleep in dream, the true Ānanda in the turīya state: one and the same person experiences all three. Turīya … what is it? That which is beyond all three. So if we wish to reach such a state, we must enter on that … path.

Students! We need not go that far. Today, by day, you are seeing this gathering with your eyes, hearing it with your ears, experiencing it with your mind. Eyes that see, ears that hear, a mind that experiences, a heart that rejoices: for all of th… …day you are gathering fitting strength. This is real. It is not dream, you … . But at night you go to the hostel, eat, and then you sleep. There you … a dream came. You had a dream that you were in your own village, that you were … roaming about with your friends. But the reality of this gathering today is not there … at all. Again, what you experienced in sleep: by the time waking comes, that … dream seems fleeting to you. In waking there is no sleep. In sleep there is no waking. But you are there in …. You are there in waking. So you are omnipresent. You, who are … in both, are Satya. This is a day dream, that a night dream. These two dreams: you, who are in the two dreams, are Satya. So first of all, … your own true nature. Pay no heed at all to the nature of these waking and dream states. I am the one who was present in both.

That is why today, in both, this world and the next, we must follow whatever path brings … Ānanda. Along with these worldly studies, we must pursue spiritual education too. That is why, 'Ādhyātmika vidyā vidyānāṃ': recognising the … inner meaning of education, we must walk the right path. We must not cast … aside, saying, 'This is avidyā'.
