Passage 7

In plain words

He is calling, "Come, O Īśvara!" "I must not join in this trade," He thought. At last he let go of that screw-pine tree, raised his trunk and called, "Come, O Īśvara!" Then God came. For God there is no such thing as coming and going. Wherever you look, He is there. When our sight falls on Him, His sight falls on us. That is what our Purāṇas write of as His sending the Sudarśana discus. Sudarśana is not some discus; su-darśana is the good look. When your look falls on God, God's look has fallen on you. As long as your look does not fall on God, God's look does not fall on you. So God is everywhere. But you must set your feeling upon Him. For this the one Name is the chief authority.

There is no doubt that by the remembrance of the Name alone we can gain anything at all. In this kingdom of the Name, this kingdom of Prema, Mokṣa has no value at all. Within this kingdom of Prema, Mokṣa belongs to a very small class. What does Mokṣa mean? Mokṣa. If one wants Mokṣa without moha being destroyed, will one get it? To grow moha from foot to head and then want Mokṣa is nothing but cheating God. Destroy your moha. Only then will He who is the embodiment of the eight glories appear before you. Without doing well the work that must be done, without thinking rightly the thoughts that must be thought, without understanding what divinity is, how can you gain happiness if you want it? Tukārām said: "Only one who knows the worth of a gem keeps it safe." One who does not know the worth of that gem throws it away anywhere. So, first of all, we must recognise the worth of this gem of the Name. The glory of the Name is no ordinary thing; this Name is the treasure of nectar churned out of all the śāstras and handed to us. So even without reading our śāstras and Purāṇas, if we place full faith in the one Name and go on chanting it and remembering it without a break, there is no sādhana easier than this. But we must not utter this japa of the Name like a tape recorder, as an artificial name. The Name is in the tape recorder. But what must we do to hear the Name? We must connect it to the current. Only when we put it into the plug does this tape sing. Then we can hear the words. Even if we cut the tape to pieces because it has songs on it, not a single sound will reach us. So a great tape called the Name of God is within our heart. Only when that Name is connected to Prema does this utter it with a holy feeling. It must arise from the heart. Not only from the heart. The Name that comes from the lips brings you only as much fruit as it brings the tape recorder. Today everything, all the karmas we perform, are taking shape in this artificial way alone.
