In plain words
God. To lift up natural beings, God takes on a natural name and comes close with a natural Prema. A father may be a high official. He may draw a large salary. He may have many mansions. He may have lakhs in wealth in the bank. But when the son goes to ask him to have a shirt stitched for him, he does not ask, ‘Father, you are so great, you are a lakhpati, you have all these mansions, you have such an income; will you have a shirt stitched for me?’ ‘Whether they pay you a salary or not is nothing to me. Whether you have mansions or not is nothing to me. How much money you have is nothing to me. Get a shirt stitched for me!’: the Name of God has that nature of asking by right. We must ask God by right. To earn this right is the very Tattva of Prema. When we attain full Prema, that right comes of itself.
Embodiments of the divine Ātma! If we want to attain God, we need not expound any śāstra, any Upaniṣad, any Veda, any Bhagavad Gītā. God is very easily pleased. He is not to be had for our money, our gold, our goods and our vehicles. He comes close only to Prema. If we want to attain God, we need not do many kinds of pūjā. All these are only actions done to make good use of time. When we make our action holy, we become those who have made time holy as well. All these actions, ‘cittasya śuddhaye karmaḥ’, bring about purity of the citta, but they do not bring God close. Prema alone draws us into His presence. We must develop that Prema as Prema free of self-interest. We must not develop it as Prema for our own ends. Prema alone is the match for Prema. God is the embodiment of Prema. To attain such an embodiment of Prema, Prema alone is the support, nothing else. If we wish to see the shining moon, we need not take a torch or a hurricane lamp to see it. It is through the moon's own light that we must see the moon. God is the embodiment of Prema, so we must attain Him through Prema alone. Yajñas, yāgas and rites without Prema, gifts, charities and tapas without Prema: these are all merely artificial. That is why we must trust God as close, as one who dwells within me always. O God, there is no parting between You and me. It is not that You are separate and I am separate. Your Prema is in me and my Prema is in You. When these two Premas meet, we are one and not different. That is why the Gopikās could attain that form of God through just such a Name.
