Passage 9

In plain words

O Kṛṣṇa,

if You grow into a tree, I will cling to it as a creeper; if You bloom as a flower, I will hover round it as a bee; if You are the boundless sky, I will sparkle there as a little star; if You are the noble ocean, I will become a river and merge in You; if You are Mount Meru, spreading wide, I will run down You as a mountain stream.

The one who longs for a close bond such as this is the true devotee. It is not bound by anything other than the Name. So: remembrance of the Name, remembrance of the Name. Many people think of remembrance of the Name as something easy, or as something of this sort. They believe it to be something of no account. What result comes from chanting the Name? ‘Recite the Veda, recite a śloka from the Bhagavad Gītā,’ they keep saying. It is not that you should not recite those. Those too you must recite with Prema. When you wish to read the Veda, you must look at it with the vision that there are hymns in it bound up with the Prema of God. Without Prema, we cannot accept anything at all.

In the barren deserts that have no Prema, so that shoots of Prema may grow, with the rapture of Prema, so that a nectar rain of Prema may pour down, so that rivers of Prema may flow, will You not play upon the flute? O Kṛṣṇa, will You not sing?

Our hearts are without Prema. In such lands, empty of Prema, put the water of Prema and soften them. Plant only the seedlings of Prema in them. Pour only the water of Prema. Send down only the rain of Prema. Then my rivers of Prema will flow and merge in You. That is why it is Prema, Prema; there is nothing in the world beyond Prema. So whatever kinds of wealth and grain you offer to God, He does not accept them. That itself is the inner meaning of the tulābhāra. However many kinds of ornaments they put in, Kṛṣṇa did not move even a little.
