In plain words

Though great riches pour in, though you ride on elephant and horse, though you are called a madman, though people praise you with affection, do not forget the Name, do not forget God. Though you practise yoga, though you study the Bhāgavata and the rest, though you grow a fine beard, though you put on the broad sect-marks, do not forget God, do not let go of the Name. Though you close your eyes and do japa, though you stand there long with folded hands, though you bow and bow and weep however much and pour out your plaints, the heart will not melt for you: do not forget the Name, do not forget God.

The Name of God must be such that it clings fast to the hearts of all. For this Name to cling to the heart, the heart must soften. For the heart to soften, we must remember the Name with Prema. Only a heart that has Prema is a soft and sweet heart.

They spoke of saṅkīrtana and kīrtana. What is the difference between kīrtana and saṅkīrtana? Kīrtana gives Ānanda to one person only. It gives Ānanda only to the one who is singing the kīrtana. Samyak kīrtanam iti saṅkīrtanam. All singing together: this is saṅkīrtana. It makes everyone rejoice. So, between kīrtana and saṅkīrtana, saṅkīrtana is very much the higher. A man who never once opened his mouth to sing will open his mouth and sing too when everyone is singing. In this saṅkīrtana the mind attains evenness. Once I went to Karnataka University in Dharwar. At the very start I began the talk in Kannada, there at Karnataka University in Dharwar. But My Kannada was far softer and sweeter than their Kannada. In that love of their language they were very happy. It is My custom to begin nāma-saṅkīrtana as soon as a talk is over. I looked at them. I resolved to observe what state they were in. A Vaiṣṇava name must stay thousands of miles away from them. Say Nārāyaṇa and they close their ears. Say Kṛṣṇa and they turn their heads away. At such a moment I began, ‘Govindakṛṣṇa jai, Gopālakṛṣṇa jai.’ They followed: Govinda Kṛṣṇa jai. Among them was a Śaiva guru. He too began to say, ‘Govindakṛṣṇa jai, Gopālakṛṣṇa jai.’ At the very end, when the talk was over, the Vice-Chancellor, Adike, came running. ‘We wondered what Sai Baba's miracles might be. Sai Baba has made people who never once in their life chanted the Name of Kṛṣṇa chant the Name of Kṛṣṇa!
