Passage 5

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Whose money is it? The people's money; and to do such harm to the people is also a path that goes against service. There is a teacher. He teaches the children. But to give the teaching he has to give in the best way: that too is service. There is a merchant. He need not go and sweep the street. In his business too, he must not go a step beyond the income fixed for him; that too is service. But when he keeps such a feeling in his mind, he becomes a servant without having to be called one. He must enter on a path by which he himself satisfies his own mind. Whether I am doing it properly or not: to his own conscience, to himself, it must give real satisfaction. So what pleases Swami is this: to carry out one's duty properly is itself service. When the chance comes, enter this society and serve this society. Do not think of service to one person alone as service. Service to the whole country is also a great service. In such a spirit of service alone is there every chance for us to experience the divine Godhead.

No one need seek out that spirit of service in any way at all. Wherever your eye falls and you see that service is needed here, bend your back and do the work. Do not look at differences such as "this sort" and "that sort". You need not weigh whether this man is poor or rich. For anyone at all, in any place, at any time it is needed, it is most necessary that you go in and serve. Hardships, sorrows and sufferings are the same for all. So in such situations it is most necessary to take part in that service without stopping to inquire at all. Above all, today the people in the villages live in very unfavourable conditions. In such a situation we must go to the villages, teach them the spirit of service in a way they understand, and bring them too to take part in this service. Many people go to the villages and clean up the dirty places. They purify some place that lies in filth and come back. How long can they go on doing it this way? We must teach the village people, in a way they understand, why we are doing this cleaning and why we are removing this filth. Through this, illness comes to us and to our children. Through this illness our life wastes away badly. We are unable to carry out our duties. So when we teach them that health is great wealth, they themselves will take it up and try to keep things clean every day. Instead, if we merely clean up once a month or once in two months, there is not much use in it.
