Passage 6

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

Enough effort must be made to have the village cleaned by the village people themselves.

In the same way, some time ago they made the decision called "ceiling on desires". What, then, is its inner meaning? Man is losing his senses and wandering in delusion through desires that go beyond all limit. He lives simply as one gone mad. He forgets the supreme principle. So they set it up under the name "ceiling on desires" with the very purpose that, first of all, these desires should be kept in check to some extent. We spend money too beyond measure. They began it with the purpose that, instead of spending it in this way, that money should be used in a fitting manner for the people, for the helpless and for the poor. But, unable to recognise its true form, people keep the giving of money alone as the main aim and go on increasing their desires just as before. We must cut down our desires. The more we increase our worldly concerns, the more our unrest alone increases. Through this, man is being bound. If we want freedom from this bondage, we must cut down our desires. We should increase them only as far as is needed.

How are we to cut down desires? Eat as much food as you need. To serve yourself heaps of food needlessly, as much as greed asks, and waste it, is a fault. You could give that food to another person and satisfy him. So the first is Do not waste food. They have taken it as a chief rule that you must not waste food at all. Annam Brahma. Prāṇam Brahma. From food alone does man come into being. For man's life, for man's body, for man's mind, food alone is the measure; food alone is the chief thing. From the food a man eats, the gross part goes out as excrement. The subtle part turns into blood. The subtlest part turns into the mind. So as the food is, so is the mind. Today food itself is the root cause of these Rāvaṇa-like minds growing in us. Without kindness, consideration, forbearance and Prema, we are growing only with bad qualities such as hatred, envy and attachment. For all this, food is the root cause. So food must be very pure, very holy and very sāttvic. It is by such food that the human form is made. The gross part of the water we drink goes out, in one way, as urine.
