Passage 7

In plain words

Today man is to be seen, but humanity is not. What is this humanness, without humanity? He shows himself to be a man only in outward appearance. It is because he has lost humanness, which is as dear to him as life, that so many kinds of turmoil have grown up in this world. So we cannot cast society aside. We must nourish society.

Today's educational institutions are all showing themselves to be mere factories that hand out degrees. But this is not the mark of an educational institution. We must reach the state where we experience, in some measure, Viveka in learning and wisdom in Viveka, and through that bring harmony to society. So, as for the learning we have studied: merely by learning some book or other by heart to get a degree, we do not become educated people. All our life long, we must serve in society in an ideal way. Society is our very life. We cannot live apart from society even for a moment. Today the educated man toils, in selfishness and self-interest, only that he and his family may be well; he takes no account at all of society, the whole. In ancient times they set great value on learning. The students of those days lived nothing but simple life, a natural life; the show of today did not exist then. Their dress and their conduct alike, they wore with great dignity. Their ways and their deeds were full of dignity. Neither in today's educated people nor in those who run education is this humility and obedience to be seen at all; they do not understand what manners means. They do not understand what Behaviour means. What Discipline means they do not understand at all. If we today cannot understand even these qualities, which stood as a trinity, what is the worth of our education? So we today must shape ourselves into people who live with honour within our society and set society in its right shape. Even on the spiritual path, what matters is not merely to enter the Ātma from Prakṛti. We must see whether we have entered Prakṛti from the Ātma. You educated people, who should become adepts able to rule Prakṛti itself, today live as slaves, fallen under the sway of Prakṛti.

You do not understand these two sayings, Satyaṃ vada, dharmaṃ cara, in the right way. A life of Satya is bound up with the fortune of the three times. It is what harmonises past, future and present.
