In plain words
It was winter. By the Roman emperor's command, the order was that every single man must enter his own name in the census lists. So, to enter their own names in the census in this way, people set out from many villages and travelled to the town called Bethlehem. At that time Mary and Joseph too had to go. Mary was then in her ninth month. Thinking that walking would be hard for her, Joseph arranged a donkey, seated her on it, and so went on with the journey. By the time they reached this town of Bethlehem, evening had come. Already, with people come from many villages, not one inn was free, and the place was teeming, so that there was nowhere even a single person could stay. The innkeeper saw Mary, worn out. But he made an arrangement for them in a cattle shed, as best suited them, and told them, "Stay here tonight." That was the night of the 24th of December. At daybreak it would be the 25th. Between twelve and one, Mary gave birth to a child. To lay the child in, there were neither things nor clothes. Inside that cattle shed there was a basket from which the cattle were fed. In that basket she laid soft grass, spread a cloth over it, and laid the child there. Within a day or two they had their names entered in this census and went back from there to the village of Nazareth.
Mary raised that boy with great Prema. Mary was a deep devotee of God. From His childhood she kept telling Him stories of God and teaching Him good qualities such as compassion, Prema and sacrifice. Growing from day to day, this boy grew up. By the time He was twelve years old, a special festival of the Jews came round. In Jerusalem great festivities were being held. To see them, Mary and Joseph took this Jesus and went to Jerusalem. Jerusalem was packed with a crowd of thousands upon thousands of people, so that one could not even walk along the road. Taking in these wonders and entertainments, this Mary and Joseph forgot Jesus for a while. Meanwhile, when they looked round, Jesus was nowhere to be seen there. Mary and Joseph went searching every street too, scanning each and every person. They were deeply distressed. Not finding the child, they were in anguish. At last, in despair, they went in, thinking, "Let us go inside the temple in Jerusalem and look." There, in the place where their teacher was giving instruction, Jesus was sitting in front, listening intently.
