In plain words
It is of no use merely to be a man in form. A man who is a man in form alone brings no distinction at all to his race. By humanness of form alone, he cannot bring divine Godliness to his race. It is most necessary to recognise the Satya that, along with the form, right conduct and right inquiry are essential. A man without right conduct and right inquiry can enjoy only the strength of his form; he cannot enjoy the Ānanda of the Ātma.
Rid yourselves of envy
Today man trusts the body alone as his support and his chief concern; he forgets the Divinity that is his own basic principle, and he develops only a material life. That is why no one in the world enjoys peace and security in full. He spends his life in constant discontent. This discontent brings man two kinds of loss. One is the unrest that comes from this discontent. The other is the unhappiness that comes from unrest. For one who has no Śānti there is no happiness at all. So what is the cause of discontent? Its root cause is envy. This envy is an evil quality that has been piling up since time without beginning. On the day envy is rooted out of man's heart, on that very day man attains contentment. The contented man enjoys Śānti. What is the cause of this discontent? What is the cause of this envy?
Envy begins when a man keeps looking at someone in a higher position than his own, at someone who got higher marks than he did, at someone who enjoys greater happiness than he does, at someone with greater beauty than his own, and thinks within himself, ‘I could never become as great as he is.’ But the man who ought to find contentment in this turns it into envy. If we want to root out this envy, then only when we take some notice of the person in a lower position than ourselves will there be no room for envy in us at all. When he sees someone who got fewer marks than he did, he thinks, ‘Oh, I am better than he is,’ and finds some satisfaction in that.
