Passage 14

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

What is the reason for this? What is the reason that the whole country is simply wasting away?

Do work worthy of your salary

Students! Recognise this well. Our desires are going beyond all bounds, and that is why the country is wasting away. Even the sky has an end. It has a limit, but our desires have no limit at all. That is why today we must make the effort to keep our desires under control. That is why ‘ceiling on desires’ was set up. When we keep reducing some desires in this way, the country will develop economically as well. Today we are not able even to repay the loans we have taken. I was not there, but I know. Today a man came from the World Bank. He taught all our MBA boys. He spoke, word for word, just what Swami has said. He is a man of much experience. Today the only reason countries are going downhill is greed. Many countries are taking loans from this World Bank. They no longer even have the income to pay the interest on these loans. In the end, when they cannot pay the interest, they have to pawn the country itself. Our Bhārata too is in that very state. It is paying some thousands of crores in interest. Meanwhile, for our part, we carry on nicely like the ghee ridge gourd. There is no ghee in it at all.

In the same way, our Bhārata has the name of being the form of Lakṣmī, the form of Annapūrṇā, but it has come to be short of food. The reason for this is just that these desires have grown. Each one thinks, “I have passed MBA, I have passed BE, I have passed MBBS; I must get a good job and a big salary”; each one wants a big salary; but if each one takes his salary and goes, who is going to develop the country? If all the money that comes in goes on their salaries, how will the country develop then?
