In plain words
They are all even. That is why, when we want to attain evenness, we must remember the Viṣṇu principle. Evenness comes to us only through Divinity; by no other path does evenness come to us; when we look with the eye of the world, everything appears different. Man today is self-interest, nothing but self-interest. It is because he looks with selfish eyes that he takes everything to be separate. In every little matter we step straight into selfishness.
A small example. Suppose all the boys of your class get together and have a photograph taken with Swami. All these boys of the class together may be some fifty. When the photographer prints the photographs of these fifty and brings them, each one first looks for where he is; he never so much as looks at the fifty faces. Even in this photograph, so much selfishness! “Am I there or not? Am I showing properly or not? Let the others be wherever they like”: such is the selfishness we practise. Leave this small matter aside. The ninth class results or the tenth class results come out for many thousands of us. If you look in the Indian Express or the Hindu, there are two full pages of nothing but numbers. How good it would be if, looking at those numbers, you rejoiced: “Aha, so many have passed!” They do not look at that. “Where is my number?”: even among these lakhs he keeps looking only for his own number. First look at everyone and rejoice. Then look for your number. Your number will surely be there. But if, instead of looking like that, thinking “Let all these go hang, my number should be seven hundred,” you start looking from seven hundred and go straight there, this fellow's number will really not be found. What is the reason? A narrow mind. Narrow feelings. These narrow feelings must leave our students. Rejoice that in our Bhārata so many lakhs have passed. Your own number will then come to you of itself. Students, develop this broad feeling. Today Bhārata is sinking through this very selfishness. Only when this selfishness and self-interest are put away will the world too shine with its own light. Today many countries describe Bhārata as a country in great poverty.
