In plain words
No. In My view, the rich man is the one who has no debts. This Birla, this Kirloskar, this Tata: look in any bank and all of them are in debt. How can they be rich? So a debtor is never a rich man. One who is unhealthy is never young. So what is the wealth we must earn? Without depending on others in any way, we must be content with what we have. Who is the richest man in the world he who has much satisfaction is the richest man. So if we want to go the right way, we must enquire into everything well. We earn, we study a great deal, we take up jobs. But even this earning we must earn in the right way. In the young people of today, every moment, desires swarm up in heaps, like ants from an anthill. Ants eat and are satisfied. They have neither the selfishness that hoards nor the wickedness that plunders. This nature that hoards and plunders is found in man alone. That is why he cannot enjoy lasting Ānanda. He cannot enjoy even a passing Ānanda.
Students! What you must recognise above all is that we must keep our desires under control as far as we can. Our life is a long journey. Less luggage more comfort make travel a pleasure, Be fearless. So, on our long journey, desires are very heavy luggage. These desires must be there. Every man hopes, “I must get a high post.” He hopes to earn great honour. He hopes to have a great mansion built. These hopes are not wrong. Hopes must be there. But these hopes must not take the form of greed or of hopes beyond all measure. If a man is to earn a good name, many hardships, losses, reproaches and misfortunes will dog him in life. The one who pushes all of them aside, bears them, and goes forward is the true man. We must never live a humanness that sinks and gives way at every moment.
