Passage 8

Tap any word for its meaning.

In plain words

If there were no knowing, how could there be any experiencing? So Ānanda is ours only when we know what is and experience it. The whole world is. How can you say that it is? The ears hear it. The mind feels it. The heart delights in it. All these are there in the world. How can one think that what is in this world is not? It is. How does this “that which is” make itself felt? Hunger. Food satisfies this hunger. Food is. It is because there is food that hunger began. If there were no food in the world, there would be no hunger at all. It is because there is hunger that food came. So what must we recognise today? Which comes first, hunger or food? We think it is hunger. No. No. That is the mistake. He created hunger only after He had created food. It is because these two are there that man is able to keep up the body called humanness. Hunger has come about for the sake of the body, not for the sake of life. So live for life; do not live for food. He who lives for food is a sinner. He who lives for the Ātma is a Gopī: so it has been said. Everything is there in the world. How do some living creatures live? When we consider what is the essence of education, Education should be for life not for living. If education were only for this, how many living creatures in the world are living without it! Beasts, birds and wild animals, worms and insects go on living. What college did they go to? In what subject did they take degrees? What did they study? So education is needed for life, not for making a living. If the true Ātma principle is to dawn in us, it is found only in divinity.

Did Śrī Kṛṣṇa study in Kaṃsa's college? Did Prahlāda study in Hiraṇyakaśipu's college?

No, no. It was the Ātma principle that dawned in them.
